In these turbulent time, and with my Sacred Activism experiences in the past 3 years specifically, the wisdom of these instructions by stewards and stewardesses give to passengers on plane has become more poignant:

Place the oxygen mask on your face first before you help your child or another

 

I learned, painfully, through a radical health challenge that I had to slow my roll for my overall well-being.

I can honestly say that self-care was not something that I gave a lot of thought to until I had to make a choice to do so.

Every morning I meditate and pray

Each time I sit with clients, I prepare with prayer and meditation.

I thought that this was enough.

I was mistaken.

They’re very important but more was necessary.

Self-care has become non-negotiable.

In these turbulent times we’re living in right now, I declare that taking time to steep oneself in self-loving and honoring activities is a requirement for everyone, particularly parents, and those who are in leadership and activist roles.

Self-care helps you to be kinder and more loving to yourself, and gracious to your children, partner, clients, friends, you name it.

Take time to tune into the silence before leaving your bed in the morning to jump into the rest of your daily activities.

Making time for self-care may seem counter intuitive to many busy mamas and women who have long to-do lists and schedules that are full to overflowing.

The excuse of time emerges easily.

You can consciously choose to have dominion over your energy, thoughts, words and actions.

Or, you can allow yourself to be at the effect of external circumstances and feel irritable.

The times we’re living in require our cultivating this choice within ourselves.

I advise parents to SLOW down so that they may be present and connect with their children and themselves.

Have you ever been around an abrupt, harried, hurried, successful person and said to yourself,  “Oh, yeh, I want that.”

I doubt it.

When you schedule time to care for yourself, it is reflected back to you in the quality of your relationships and the success of your business.

It affects how you care for your children and how available you are for your partners and friends.

This then ripples out into how you interact in the world and care for the planet.

When you neglect or push yourself beyond your limit, it shows up in your relationships.

Make a commitment to practice self-care.

Take time to pause, breathe, slowly, deeply, and intentionally, bringing your awareness to your heart.

This feels so good.

It resets your brain, nervous system and calms your heart.

 

I invite you to make a list of what your self-care practice will look like for you.

What has your heart smile?

When you are in your joy, endorphins and oxytocin – feel good hormones-  are released into your system.

Let yourself dream into what lights you up.

Know that it will evolve as you engage in self-care.
